Sarasota has become a magnet attracting countless newcomers to pristine sandy beaches, boating, golf and…a more than spectacular… cultural scene.

How about an International Arts Festival, choreographed by Mikhail Barishnikov… the first ever in America Chalk Festival, an International Film Festival that’s among the top 10 in the country… as well as on-going live Theatre, Opera, Orchestra, resident Ballet, rotating Ringling Museum Art Exhibits and a renowned college of art and design.

Maybe, that’s why Sarasota is quickly becoming “THE” destination for buyers of second or, third homes.


Money magazine has identified Sarasota as the “best small city in America” and Fortune Magazine considers it the most “romantic city for well-off older singles”.

Along Bayfront, Central and Main are low and high-rise condos offering an engaging sense of community featuring a weekly Farmer’s Market on Main, neighborhood pubs and cafes as well as a plethora of entertainment and nightlife.

Quaint and historic pockets of homes can be found in the neighborhood of Laurel Park. Surrounded by galleries, restaurants & boutiques, it is one of Sarasota’s oldest neighborhoods with downtown amenities only blocks away.

The brightly colored bungalows of Towles Court house artists, studios, boutiques and small cafes while neighboring Burns Court, boasts an assortment of restaurants, retail shops and 1920’s town homes of the Mediterranean revival era.

South of downtown is an area that’s “West of the Trail” with much sought-after, bayfront neighborhoods, like Harbor Acres and Cherokee Park. A small shopping village features in-crowd shopping, dining and live entertainment along Osprey & Hillview Avenues.

Sprawling east, north and south, upscale golf communities like Lakewood Ranch and the Founders Club, equestrian estates and affordable developments for young families to expand are in various stages of construction. There’s even a polo club and world class rowing center with a major shopping center under development.

Lido Key

Directly across from Sarasota’s downtown, Lido Key provides something for everyone. Mansions on small lots interspersed with modest homes radiate from St. Armands Circle’s enclave of upscale shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Along the west shore, condos and hotels overlook Lido’s public beach, while southern and northern points offer natural settings of tranquil natural beauty for kayaking, shelling, birding and fishing.

Bird Key

Located between Sarasota’s bayfront and Lido Key, this island was dredged in 1960 and developed by Arvida. Now, it has some of the most opulent and most expensive waterfront mansions in town. There are a few empty lots where existing homes have been leveled as well as glimpses of an occasional tastefully renovated ranch with deepwater boating.

Longboat Key

North of Lido is the exclusive island of Longboat offering plenty of golf, tennis, boating, Zagat rated restaurants and less populated beaches. Resorts and condominiums dot the shoreline with a smattering of mansions while bayside neighborhoods offer deepwater docks for access to Sarasota Bay. Approximately 80 percent of Longboat residents are part-time. As a matter of fact, the island is empty in summer months.

Siesta Key

Over the years artists and writers like painter Syd Solomon and novelist John D. McDonald, have turned Siesta Key into a colony of creativity. While the north end of the island is a haven to single-family beach and canal-front homes, condominiums can be found mid key along Crescent beach and near the village. South of Stickney Point Bridge, condos and resorts give way to estate properties and gated communities then condos once again become part of the scene at Turtle Beach.

Casey Key

Connected to the mainland by an ancient, one-lane steel swing bridge, Casey Key is an enclave of the very wealthy. A single road that barely allows for two cars, winds past grand estate homes and a few remaining beach cottages. The key is skinny as a snake, but its elevation is enough to survive the pounding of that rare tropical storm. The most coveted estates own property from Gulf to Bay. Stephen King and Martina Navratilova have homes here.


Back on the mainland from Casey Key is a Sarasota community called Osprey. The Oaks Club offers elegant, upscale living with exceptional deepwater boating and first-rate golf course. It was the South County’s first high-end golf-course community and remains one of the most prestigious in the region.


Sarasota County continues to sprawl southward and includes “the island of Venice”. Separated from the mainland by a man-made Intra-coastal Waterway, this is a delightful 1920’s town of parks and pedestrian-friendly avenues that were designed by John Nolen. He’s also credited for New York City’s Central Park. Unlike other wealthy towns, Venice is unpretentious and friendly with the downtown maintaining a Mediterranean Revival Style. The main thoroughfare, Venice Avenue is flanked by boutiques and cafes facing a grassy park-like setting of walking and jogging paths, bandstand and tennis courts. Eventually this divided, tree lined road leads directly to one of many public beaches.

Once considered reasonable, the island has seen home prices soar. Off island, north, east and south of town, sprawling developments have made an appearance offering golf, boating and family friendly alternatives.

Manasota Key

This long barrier island draws people who want seclusion in a natural setting that includes plenty of wildlife.

It’s one of the few places left, on the west coast, resembling the “Old Florida”… the way it used to be in the ‘40’s and’50’s. Here, there are not… as many mega-mansions …yet! Year after year another older home falls by the wayside.
